The Kiwanis Club or Orofino, Idaho was founded in 1954. One of the club’s first projects was to raise funds for the construction of Clearwater Valley Hospital. The club has been active in numerous service activities in the community since then. A partial list of service activities from over the years is:
- College scholarships - the club currently gives two (2) $1000.00 scholarships to seniors at Orofino High School
- Purchase of baby grand piano for Orofino High School
- Construction of playground equipment in the City Park and behind the elementary school
- Annual Kid’s Fair at Orofino Elementary School
- Christmas Express - providing toys and coats for children
- Community Clean-up Day
- Christmas tree pick up
- Sponsorship of Kiwanis Track Club
- Installation of handicap ramps throughout the downtown area
- Sponsor of two (2) K-Kids clubs at Orofino Elementary School
- A service club for elementary school children
- Sponsors of 6th grade forestry tours
- Sponsors of Orofino High School Advanced Government Class in the “We the People” program
- Student of the Month at Orofino High School and Jr. High School
- Woodwinder Trail/Kiwanis Park
The club continues to look for new service opportunities, both in the local community, the region and the world, with an emphasis on young people and the development of good citizens for the future.
In order to carry out our service projects it is necessary to raise money. Currently the club has the following fundraisers:
- RADIO DAYS - In November the club is allowed to take over the local radio station, KLER. The club sells ads to local merchants and keeps all the proceeds for service projects.
- CIRCUS - Every other year the club sponsors a Culpepper Merriwether Circus. The club sells advance tickets for the circus. This is an excellent fundraiser as well as a service to the community in providing high quality family entertainment.
- SEE’S CANDY - during the Christmas season the club runs a candy sale of See’s candy, a high quality candy. The first year was 2002 and we hope to get this fund raiser more established in the future.
